Will There Be Carhauler 'Barges' In The Future

As always I read stories about how technology is improving our lives and the car hauler industry. It makes me feel like we are getting 'somewhere' (Excuse the play on words). More and more I see stories about an old technology being brought back and do not know whether to see it as progress or decline.

Train was given new life as the cost of fielding a truck became outrageous due  to increased oil costs and regulation

Now thats technology!
Now there is one more. According to The Saratogian.com, a New York online news publication, barge is being considered as a way to move goods across the Hudson River to New York City

What? Didnt we put a man on the moon. Dont we have the ability to clone sheep, create marvel medicines, build high speed bullet trains, use satellites for wireless communication, and launch pilotless drones into the atomosphere to name just a few of the innovations of modern man. And now we are going to use barge to deal with the next round of logistics challenges in the 21st century.

Canal or barge systems have not been a major means of transportation since the 1800s...the early 1800s. Isn't this a giant leap backward for mankind. We cannot honestly be considering something this technologically boring?

But why not?

  • We have the barges.
  • We have the waterway (duh)
  • We have a huge need to keep jobs here (local products will be shipped by barge across river)
  • We have a need to ship things cheaply to avoid running consumer costs skyhigh
So why do I feel like we are going backwards or starting over. I am wondering if we are reverting to a backwards third world country with cheap manufacturing due to a weak dollar, trains, and barges. Is the next big thing riding horses to work to save fuel and road maintenance costs.

Should I be practicing my horseback riding? Five years ago that statement would have seemed ridiculous. Now..I am not so sure. We have horses, and oats or hay are still pretty cheap. I think we should at least consider the possibility that we are going to be driving a different, more literal, type of mustang to work.

Can you imagine how strange you are going to look texting on your smart phone while your shoes (hopefully boots at this point) are in stirrups? Even better, I cannot wait to read that my favorite foods were delivered by environmentally 'friendly' means like donkey, horse, or barge.Adds new meaning to the term 'free range' products.

Or even weirder, UPS could start offering multiple means of delivering your package. There could be a new classes of transportation ranging from next day, to three day barge or seven day horse. Imagine the discount you will get for seven day horse class. We might never pay for a brown UPS truck again.

Maybe these homegrown, albeit traditional, means of transportation are a good thing. When we started using trucks and planes we had no idea gas would roar up to over $4 a gallon. We had no idea that repairing roads would be difficult if the government had to tax us to pay for it. We were in the dark not realizing that a 'diesel' exhaust would be killing our atmosphere and changing weather patterns.

Now every trip to the store will be a living history lesson with my kids. They don't just have to read about the history of transportation, they are going to live it.

So bring it on...We should go all out. Trains, barges, horses, mules, donkeys, canals, carriages, covered wagons (why not), and air ballons..I say if its cheap to do and we have it here...saddle up partner.

Are Automated Trucks In The Near Future

This reminds me of a really good 80s sci-fi drama. The Economist is talking about the success of automated vehicles, especially trucks in the military. And When I say automated I mean...........

Robotic, human free, autonomous, pilot-less

You get the point. If the military is using it, the private sector will not be far behind. Who knows at some point you might see HOV lanes coverted into Robot Truck or Car hauler lanes that move trucks back and forth without human error, unions, expenses, etc.

it should be interesting

Emergency Diesel Reserves To Be Released

A Little Fuel Goes A Long Way

In the interest of being proactive the Federal Government is releasing emergency diesel reserves to the Northeast. Increasing fuel supplies will help bring stability to the region by:

  • Helping to prevent a runup in commodity prices or price gouging on fuel
  • Helping to stabilize transportation in the Northeast
  • Reducing strain on fuel supplies in other regions

Hopefully this will accelerate efforts to restabilize the Northeast after the aftermath of Sandy.

Car Hauler Industry Heavily Staffed In The Northeast

I know in the car hauler industry a large portion of the drivers and car hauler companies are in the Northeast. Getting a car hauler back on the road is another part of an economic engine that needs to keep moving

The Car Hauler Business In The Age Of The Driver Shortage

I am beginning to sound like a broken record. The driver shortage is a problem, not just for the car hauler industry but for all of trucking. On the car hauler side, it is inevitable there will probably be delays in shipping cars if there are not enough drivers to ship them. That is, of course, unless your willing to pay more for drivers.

This is the dilemma. The government wants drivers:

  • who are healthier
  • who are high performers
  • who are safe
  • who have good track records
  • who are professional
  • who only work a given number of hours
  • who spend thousands more for emissions friendly vehicles
And I say that is great..but what are you going to do to get enough drivers on the road to replace those who have flunked out or left the industry.

This is the question with some possible scenarios

  1. Driver pay COULD get outrageously high
  2. The price of goods could skyrocket
  3. People will have to pick up their own goods
  4. Goods just wont sell or get moved since shipping them makes them cost prohibitive
  5. A combination of the above

The time to start thinking about the impact of this shortage is now

CSA: Being Reviwed by Congress

Though being a car hauler is a small segment of the trucking industry it still deals with the ramifications of the CSA. Well there is a saying, every dog has its day. In this case, the trucking lobby has its day in front of Congress in an attempt to correct some problems with the CSA program. According to a Transport Topics article some of the deficiencies of the program are:

  • Problems with the carrier data being incomplete or inaccurate in determining a carriers rank and status
  • The point system for crashes also assigns blame regardless of whether the accident was preventable or not
  • The CSA does not correctly portray a carriers safety record

Hey Car Hauler...One Less Future Toll On I-95

Sometimes finding good news is not always that easy. Sometimes you have to spin and contort to get the right light shining on that silver lining. Well guess what? This is one of those times. So here we go

According to a Truckinginfo.com article I-95 is only going to put up one toll instead of two.

I can only imagine your level of excitement but this is still good news. This is the first move by ANYONE to scale back the number of tolls. Up to now it has been a feeding frenzy of states poised to toll the trucking industry into financial oblivion. Now there is a chink in their armor.

Car haulers In The Future World Of Higher Tolls

New Strap Car Hauler Unit
It used to be that the word Fuel would strike fear into the heart of a car hauler or trucker. A new addition to this feared word group is coming about. That word is tolls and any car hauler knows that it is one of the most contentious cost issues being faced by car carriers on the road today. According to a Transport Topics article one state is cracking down on drivers who are trying to avoid them.

The State of Ohio is charging drivers full price if they mysteriously lose their ticket. Traditionally drivers would lose their ticket and then get issued a cheaper ticket since there was no proof of the original.

those days are over

The only problem is, it is not just the driver who is getting the ticket. The cost of this Ohio toll, and the higher New York tolls, the I-95 toll, the tolls emerging in other states...is that the cost is passed onto you and me.

So really we are paying these tolls in the form of more expensive goods.

The question is, how expensive will things have to get before the public backlash about tolls is heard

Arkansas Truckers to Save $4 Million with July 1 Tax Break - ArkansasBusiness.com

Arkansas Truckers to Save $4 Million with July 1 Tax Break - ArkansasBusiness.com

I dont know if this is just politics as usual in the state house or not. But economies cannot grow
if trucking is overwhelmed with costs and regulations. I would bet this will have a stimulus effect
so that more trucking companies are profitable enough to:

  • stay in business
  • move more freight

If products and services do not get delivered the economy does not move. I can tell you that if car hauler drivers cannot make a living cars wont be sold because they are not making it to the dealerships. Imagine this
for every product you buy?

Schneider Offers $99 Deal for Used Truck Buyers - Truckinginfo.com

car hauler for sale:
I love the idea of this but 2 months seems kind of tight for a new truck buyer to resume normal payments. I guess the thinking is that since finance is the big hurdle the two months of $99 finance is like a bonus. I would be interested to say how well the program does Who knows maybe it will go industry wide someday...maybe even to car haulers. Though I currently see no plans in sight, I a can tell you that if someone offered aggressive finance and two months of $99 in the car hauler
industry on a Cottrell...the buyers would be lined up around the door.

Commentary on article pertaining to Car Haulers: New Jersey Congressmen Call for Suspension in Toll Hikes - Truckinginfo.com

With the Government feeding frenzy for revenue, one has to wonder what the impact of tolls will mean for car haulers. On the one hand, costs have been going up everywhere. On the other hand, the people buying cars are not seeing very much growth in their wages, making it unlikely that the costs of cars can keep increasing, since they will have priced themselves out of competition. Eventually it could have a massive impact on the Car Hauler Industry.

Another One Bites The Dust...But At Least It Is Not A Car hauler

Used Car Hauler
I have not heard of many car haulers being shutdown. Actually I have not heard of any. This is good but according to Fleetowner newsline online a New Jersey carrier is not so lucky. According to the publication, The FMCSA shut down the carrier for:

  • Operating without the proper authority
  • Operating trucks with serious mechanical defects
  • Hours of service violations
  • Driver qualification violations

Hey Car Hauler...The Tollman Cometh

This sounds like a joke but the cost of running your car hauler has just gone up...I commend the Federal government for reeling in the feeding frenzy of states who wanted to start tolls everywhere. They slowed this process down BUT 3 states already have the approval to start tolling the interstates.

This has been a familiar trend. Every car hauler knows that regulations have spun out of control and the cost to run a car hauler trailer have increased exponentially. Now there is the added expense of these 3 tolls to run your car hauler. The states are:

  • North Carolina
  • Virginia
  • Missouri

Continued Challenges for Car Haulers

The challenges never cease for today's car hauler....

They say a picture is worth a thousand words
And I guess a video is worth a thousand pictures
But a really scary statistic might be worth a coronary..

well here it is. Abc Action News says it costs as much for the average family in Tampa Bay to fill their tank as it does pay their mortgage. The statistic needs no embellishment. It is pretty clear vision of how critical the fuel issue has become. As diesel goes up every car hauler feels it. The question is, will it reach these kind of levels where the cost to fill your tank simply will not cover the cost of the load

Before I would say that scenario was unlikely. After a story like this though...who knows?
